IBCLC's are certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners. Not a "Let's see if I can pass this test" but a 4 hour exam based on years of study and 1,000 hours of clinical experience. I had my BSEd. when I started on my journey to become an IBCLC and still spent a grueling 18 months studying while balancing home life and pregnancy, then a newborn. It took awhile for that sweet baby to learn that it wasn't always time to nurse when I sat at the computer or opened the laptop. At 6months, I nervously handed her over to my sister to play while I took the exam. (A tale for another time)
IBCLC's have a firm understanding of normal breastfeeding and can assist with situations outside of the normal course of breastfeeding referring to others in the medical community who can best assist when necessary.
IBCLC's can help with breastfeeding concerns from latching and positioning to the more complex concerns such as sore nipples/breasts, poor weight gain, tethered oral tissues, supply concerns, returning to work, breast infections, adoptive nursing, weaning, bottle refusal and so much more. We offer a listening ear, a shoulder to lean on and often a hug, cheer and a tissue!
Why hire a Private Practice IBCLC?
As a Private Practice IBCLC, I meet you in the comfort of your home. Nope, I'm not going to inspect your home for cleanliness or count the dust bunnies. I'm there to assist you in your time of need, to answer your questions and concerns or those of your mother or partner. My goal is to help you reach YOUR breast feeding goals. Whether they be 6 weeks,6 months, a year or longer- It's your goal. I will happily cheer you on and give encouragement along the way. Stumbling blocks? No worries, I've seen and heard lots of concerns and helped many families overcome them.
While most consultations are 2 hrs in length, I don't just leave your side when I leave your home. I'll continue checking in with you to see how you and your sweet bundle are doing. I'll also share resources that may help you along the way.
I love meeting new families and cheering them on- after all I really do want each of the families I serve to feel Empowered, Educated and Supported from the beginning of their breastfeeding journey to Beyond the Breast!
